February is kindness month in Kindergarten! We will be exploring how to demonstrate kindness and empathy to others around us! We will be learning about how to work and learn with others who may be different than us.
We have BC and Alberta Guide Dogs company come into our classroom to give a presentation to students about guide dogs. For the AM class, this presentation will be on Monday, Feb. 3rd at 9:30 am and for the PM class, this presentation will be on Tuesday, Feb. 4th at 1:15 pm. A dog will be present in our classroom during this time. If your child is frightened of dogs, we have a space for them to watch from a distance.
The purpose of this presentation is to teach students about who might have a guide dog, what to do when you meet a guide dog and how a guide dog is trained. We are hoping to build our empathy skills!
For our sharing this month, students can bring something from home that they love or that shows love or kindness. No more ocean animals! :)
We will also be starting a Kindness Jar. Whenever someone is caught being kind, they get a warm fuzzy (pom pom). They put their warm fuzzy into the Kindness Jar. Once the jar is full, our class will get to secretly spread kindness to others!
Thursday, Feb. 6th is Math Night!

Ocean Party Tomorrow!
Just a quick reminder that tomorrow is our "Ocean Party!" If possible, have your child wear ocean colours, bring a beach towel and bring an ocean stuffy from home!
Also, a reminder that Friday is a PD day so there will NOT be school for either class!

Letter Qq
Welcome to our last week of learning about the ocean! We are also learning about the sound that the letter Q makes! We did some printing, learned a song and read a poem about the letter Q. The letter q has a partner, letter u, that always tags along.
Have your child tell you the sound a Q makes!

Mark your calendars for our Ocean Party!
Learning all about the ocean and ocean animals has been a wonderful experience for students. We have one week left in our ocean unit and wanted to throw an ocean party to wrap up all of our learning experiences.
On Thursday, January 30 is our Ocean Party in Kindergarten!
Students should wear ocean themed colours such as blue or grey.
Students can bring an ocean themed stuffed animal to spend the day with them.
If you would like to bring in a healthy "ocean" themed snack for the class to share please feel free to do so. We kindly request that these snacks be nut free and egg free to accommodate our students with allergies.
As part of our celebration we'll be watching the movie Finding Nemo and students can bring a beach towel to sit on while they watch.
Narwhal and Jelly
This week started off all about the narwhal and then we moved into jellyfish courtesy of our read alouds over the last few days. Students loved the 3 books we read in the Narwhal and Jelly series by Ben Clanton. If you haven't read them with your child yet, we'd definitely recommend them for lots of laughs!
Jellyfish Art
This jellyfish experiment showed students that plastic bags in the ocean can sometimes be mistaken for jellyfish. Turtles love eating jellyfish but will often eat plastic bags by accident.
Please keep our oceans clean!

It's Narwhal Week!
We started off today talking about the "unicorn of the sea" - the narwhal! Students had fun testing out our blubber experiment!
Our new letter this week is G. We read Gregory the Terrible Eater by Mitchell Sharmat. This book is the inspiration for our new alphabet must do centre page.
This week we started "formal" small group language arts and math centres. Students will work with Mrs. Alm and Ms. Bakker twice each week to complete a task in their colour groups.
It was a busy day introducing some new centres in our classroom as well.
The ocean themed photobooth was very popular!
