Patterns!

We have started to delve more into patterns. In the next few weeks, we will learn how to extend, replicate and create our own patterns. Watch for some of our pattern center time activities to come home in the next few weeks.

Today, students were given materials to create patterns however they liked. Here are some of their ideas:

Movember

The Hawkwood School spirit club has organized a fundraiser this month called Movember. This is a popular annual event involving the growing of moustaches (or, in this case, wearing a fake one!) to raise awareness about physical and mental health in men.

Classes are collecting monetary donations or coins throughout this week.

AM Kindergarten students are encouraged to wear their own faux facial hair on Friday, November 29. To make a moustache, students may use their finger, create their own or purchase one from places like the Dollarama!

Lively Letters!

In Kindergarten we have started on working on letters sounds using the Lively Letter program.  This program teaches students to focus on the movement of their tongue and lips to make each letter sound.  Students have already learned the sounds /p/ and /b/.  Each week we will focus on a new letter sound and we will post the story that accompanies each sound.  Feel free to practice these at home.

Mark Your Calendars!

Join us for our winter performance!
When: Tuesday, December 17th
Time: 6:30 pm
Where: Hawkwood School Gym
Feel free to invite family members! More information to follow in the upcoming weeks!

Conferences and the EYE assessment

Just a quick reminder that conference sign-up is now open for you to book a time slot with us! Please have your child attend as well as they are excited to teach you all about their learning!

Conferences are next week Wednesday, Nov. 20th, Thurs. Nov. 21st and Fri. Nov. 22nd. There will be NO school for both AM and PM classes on those 3 days.

One of the pieces of information we will be sharing with you at conferences is about the Early Years Evaluation Assessment (EYE Assessment). In the upcoming days, we will send home a green letter with your child that outlines the information gathered about your child through the EYE assessment. This assessment is separate from the Report Card that will be coming home at the end of December. We will speak with each family individually on your child's progress at conferences.

Have a wonderful evening!

Picture Retakes and A Missing Boot!

Just a quick reminder that picture retake day is TOMORROW!! I do have a few names on the list for wanting retakes. If you haven't let me know, just send me a quick email (jjbakker@cbe.ab.ca) or dress up your child in their finest and I will just send them anyway! :)

Also, we have a student in our afternoon class who has appeared to worn home two different size boots! They are the identical match expect their is a 2 size difference. Please have a look at home if your child has this boot. It may not be their size! Thank you in advance!!

Today was an exciting day as we started our exploration of dinosaurs! Through our inquiry into dinosaurs students will develop many foundational skills such as comparing and contrasting, how to ask questions about what we want to know, how to find information and how to cooperate in order to achieve a community goal. During the next few weeks, we encourage your child to share anything dinosaur related that they may want to bring from home (this is optional). We have already started exploring and asking questions during center time today!

Halloween Fun!

We had a wonderful time celebrating Halloween last week! Students got to experience new centers revolving around pumpkin decorating, dancing and even wrapping each other up at mummies!
