Halloween is tomorrow!

It has been a busy week!

A couple of information items for Halloween tomorrow:
Your child can dress up in costume for the day (please no weapons with the costume).
We will be having a 'party' with games and music!
It's going to be a great day!

There is NO school on Friday as it is a PD day.

Our afternoon class brought home their first library book earlier this week. Our morning class will be bring home their library book today. Please look inside the back cover for the date of book return. This is the date that we will be doing book exchange. Please return library book in the book back that was given to your child. As part of our learning about story sequencing, have your child 'retell' the story in their library book by using the pictures as prompts. Students are not expected to be able to read their book but we have been working on looking at pictures to tell the story.

This past week, we have been working on story sequencing. We read the book "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat" multiple times. Students were then asked to retell the story in the proper order. We will be working on story sequencing all year!

We have also been working on sorting! Students should now know how to sort by one attribute (color, size or shape). We will move onto patterning in the upcoming months!

Spooky Halloween Houses!

Students continue to practice their fine motor skills such as cutting shapes, coloring and holding their pencils correctly. Today they created our 'spooky' Halloween houses as a way of practicing some of these skills!
Students had to cut out simple shapes (circle, square and triangle) to create the moon and house. Then they were able to add any halloween decorations of their choice! This was also a great chance to discuss common colors we see around this time of year. Finally, students could add a 'web' to their picture to add to the ambiance!

Here are some samples of what they created!

Happy Friday!

Thank you to all who came out to Literacy Night yesterday! We had a few of our students win a couple of prizes from the draw box!

This week, we did more sorting activities around size and shape in math. We also explored fall poems in literacy.

Next week, we will be introduced to new centers that have a pumpkin/Halloween theme! We will also be reading and working with new poems that connect to colors.

Just a reminder that next Friday, October 25th is our school council's annual Hawkwood Halloween Dance! The dance will take place in our gym and Hawk's Nest from 6:30-8:30 pm. Dress up in costume! A letter was sent home this week with more information. Hope to see you there!

Enjoy your weekend!

Heading into the long weekend...

Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to our Thanksgiving meal!  It was so much fun and we were so proud of our students for trying something new.  Some of them even had seconds!  We made soup, cornbread and salad, we did some art, made a placemat (complete with a guided drawing of a turkey), set the table and practiced our manners.  Now they're ready to help you out at home this weekend.  ;)

Have a wonderful long weekend with family and friends!  School resumes on Tuesday.

Thankful Art

Smelling some spices (basil, oregano, cumin)

We're so excited for our Thanksgiving meal tomorrow!  Please send your child in fall coloured clothes if they have any.  It would be great to see a field of red, orange, yellow and brown!

*Also a reminder that book orders are due tomorrow whether they are online or if your child brings the form to school.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

We've been working on story sequencing for the past few weeks.  Students have become very familiar with Eric Carle's story The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  Students coloured their own "puppets" to bring home and retell the story to you.  Please cut them out with your child and attach to popsicle sticks if you have them and prepare to be entertained!  :)
